Today show star Al Roker's strict exercise routine revealed... 25 years after his life-changing gastric bypass

For Today show's Al Roker, consistency is key when it comes to health and fitness.

In recent years, the longtime meteorologist, 71, has strived to incorporate exercise into his life every single day, even if it's only for a few minutes.

Roker underwent a life-changing gastric bypass in 2001, which saw him shrink from 340lbs to 190lbs and in 2023, he dropped a further 45lbs thanks to keeping a low-carb diet.

Since then, he has successfully maintained his weight loss

Roker is transparent when it comes to sharing his journey too, and often documents his routines and diet on social media - and isn't afraid to admit when he's struggling to stay motivated.

Here, the Daily Mail takes a closer look at Roker's exercise routine.

Roker champions an early morning workout and likes to hit the gym before going over to work at Rockefeller Center's Studio 1A.

His motto is 'something is better than nothing,' even if that means just doing a quick 10-minute weight routine before hitting the treadmill for 20 minutes.

'I pity the fool who doesn't check off the workout early,' Roker wrote alongside a montage video of him doing weights earlier this week.

Roker's strength training routine targets both the upper and lower body and includes triceps dips, goblet squats, bicep curls, calf raises and step-ups.

The Today show favorite has enlisted the help of personal trainer Jose Garcia.

Roker discovered the benefits of walking after he underwent surgery for prostate cancer in 2020 – and he hasn't looked back since.

Last January, he detailed his commitment to walking 10,000 steps every single day.

Speaking to the Daily Mail previously, he said that he even wakes up extra early to make sure he's well on his way to achieving his target.

'I try not to go hay wire. I just like to work things in,' he said. 'That's why I like to walk. You can walk to other things to go do stuff.

'I mean, I was running a little behind, but normally, I would have taken a walk to the subway. I would have walked to the subway from home and walked over here.'

Roker starts each day with at least 10 minutes of strength training

After using weights to work his muscles, he then hits the treadmill for 30 minutes

Explaining how he manages to meet his daily goal, Roker said: 'I get up in the morning and I try to do a mile before I leave for work on a treadmill.

'Today, I had a doctor's appointment, so I walked to the doctor, walked back to work, and I walked home. In the building, I've got a treadmill desk.'

But Roker, like many of us, sometimes finds himself struggling to stay on track with his exercise.

Earlier this week, he revealed he had to have a talk with himself so he didn't spend the whole morning in front of the fireplace.

'Sometimes you need that,' he said alongside a video of him at the gym. 'Problem is, I've been doing a little too much of that and not enough of this.'

As for his diet, Roker always begins his day with yogurt, granola and a banana, and will prep high protein egg bites for a quick morning snack.

His dinners are usually sheet pan meals with lots of rich fibres and proteins.

'Chicken thighs are probably my go-to,' he told People last year.

Roker has previously spoken about the realities of battling a food addiction.

Writing in his 2012 book, Never Goin' Back: Winning the Weight Loss Battle for Good, he detailed his battle with binge eating and weight loss and how it had impacted his life, career, and marriage to TV journalist Deborah Roberts.

Roker underwent bariatric surgery in 2002 (pictured) after promising his dying father, Albert Lincoln Roker Sr., he'd lose weight and get healthy

'My wife is a size 4; she runs, she works out and it became a problem in our marriage. On a Saturday she'd get up, get dressed to run and I'd be sitting on the couch or making breakfast for the kids and was quite happy about our choices. She, on the other hand, was not,' he wrote in an essay for Today in 2013.

'She was upset about it, she was frustrated, she was angry,' he recalled. 'She thought, 'Why don't you care enough about yourself and why don't you care about me and our relationship enough to change?' And I said, 'Look, it's not about you. It's about me.''

In Roker's memoir, he explained how the turning point in his health journey came after he promised his dying father, Albert Lincoln Roker Sr., he'd lose weight.

'I don't know if you've ever had to make a deathbed promise to someone you love, but if you have, you know the kind of guilt and massive responsibility I felt in that moment,' he wrote.

On March 15, 2022, Roker celebrated the 20-year anniversary of his gastric bypass surgery, saying he will 'never forget' how far he has come since losing more than 100 pounds.

He marked the occasion on Instagram by sharing photos of himself with his old jeans to show how he was half the size he was two decades ago.

'Hard to believe it was 20 years ago today, I wore these size 54 Levi jeans to my #gastricbypass at 340 lbs and here I am today,' he wrote in the caption.

'It's still a struggle but I'm never going back,' he added. 'I have setbacks and struggle every day, but I never forget how far I've come.'
