SKIPZ AFL INJURY UPDATE: Barrass to undergo fitness test
All the injury news ahead of Hawthorn’s Opening Round clash.
Tom Barrass will undergo a fitness test ahead of Hawthorn’s Opening Round clash against the Giants this Saturday as he recovers from soreness following the State of Origin match.
Cam Mackenzie has entered concussion protocols after the AAMI Community Series match against the Western Bulldogs, while draftee Cameron Nairn is a week away from football action.
Hawthorn High Performance Manager Peter Burge also provided an update on the club’s longer term injury list, including details on Will Day and James Blanck.
Tom Barrass – Soreness (Test)
“Played a significant role for Western Australia in the State of Origin two and a half weeks ago, just a little slower to recover from that game then we’d hoped. But he’s back full training this week. We’ve listed him as a test, completed full training today, will full train again Thursday and we look to have him available for selection on the weekend.”
Cam Mackenzie – Concussion (1 week)
“Just a concussion injury, so he’s into the concussion protocols which is at least a 12-day turn around. But given he’s gone into the protocols pretty much straight away, we’re optimistic Round 1 he’ll be available.”
Cameron Nairn – Back (1 week)
“It’s progressing really well, he’s a week away from doing some game-time at VFL. But it’s more a historical injury through the under 18s where we found a couple of weeks in when he was drafted here we did some scans and found more of a historical back issue that we had to manage over the Christmas break and since then. And given he’s 18, he’s young, a first-year draftee with a long career ahead it was the right move to back him off. And he’s had a slow progression back into training over the last 8-10 weeks with some conditioning, some managed football training but now we’re able to increase his football involvement and look at some game time at the end of next week.”
Will Day – Shoulder (3 months)
“Will’s six weeks post-surgery at the moment, and he’s already started back running last week so we’re into his second week of conditioning and given it’s a shoulder issue it doesn’t stop us from really working at his conditioning and speed and endurance and all of those things. So those things we’re now starting to build again, as well as building strength back into his shoulder which we had a successful surgery there. So, it won’t be long, probably within the next month that he’ll be doing some form of non-contact skills and we’ll get quite a long preparation into his return to contact and then subsequently return to play, which we’ll be able to update over time what that looks like.”
James Blanck – Groin (TBC)
“Pre-Christmas he was going great, he had the full pre-Christmas period then came back post-Christmas after the Christmas break and second week back was just starting to report some groin pain, which came on quite quickly and quite strongly and we had to back off. It’s been a bit of a battle actually to get him back going and we’ve had to take a longer-term approach. So there was a period of time where we had to keep him off legs and were just cross-training and looking at strength measures and those sorts of things that we do medically, and they’ve just started to turn around, and we’ve been able to start running. It has been longer than we would’ve liked but we’re slowly moving back into some straight-line running and we’ll just keep updating everyone over the next couple of weeks, but it’s going to take us a little bit more time before we have him back doing football."
