Juan Quintero suffered a heart attack in the gym during his workout.
Jose Sebastian Anzola Quintero died after collapsing during a workout. The bodybuilding champion was in the middle of his session when he fell to the ground after suffering a heart attack at a Smart Fit gym in northwest Bogota, Colombia.
According to multiple reports, gym staff and other members rushed over to Quintero and performed CPR for 25 minutes. Those close to Quintero have called for an investigation following his death.
Smart Fit Colombia made an official statement claiming that Quintero “presented in a sudden manner a cardiorespiratory arrest” and confirmed that its team of first responded on scene began action right away. According to Daily Star, Quintero’s close friend, Andres Montoya, believes that the gym did not have the staff or equipment needed to prepare for a situation such as this.
“We cannot guarantee he would have been saved, but there could have been a possibility of a different outcome.”
Quintero doubled as a bodybuilder and business owner who sold nutritional supplements. He was also an industrial designer, who worked as a trainer with a master’s level background in physical well-being. On stage, Quintero competed as a Classic Physique bodybuilder and was victorious in five events.
Bodybuilder Dies During Workout
The death of Juan Quintero follows an unfortunate string in the bodybuilding world. In January, IFBB Pro Jason Lowe passed away after suffering a heart attack.
Lowe began his career at the NPC level. He earned his Pro Card at the NPC Junior USA Championships in the Classic Physique division.
This is where Lowe began his pro career in 2017, competing twice. Lowe would go onto win his first show during the 2018 San Antonio Pro. He appeared in his first Olympia the very next year, finishing 16th. Lowe competed in some of the biggest shows of the year in 2020, including a second-place finish during the New York Pro in the 212 division. His division change was successful as he competed in the 212 Olympia that year as well.
