New outdoor exercise equipment arrives on the West Marsh
Eight pieces of outdoor exercise equipment are now available for the residents of West Marsh. The workout area is located outside the West Marsh Community Centre and was acquired after the centre applied and achieved funding from Better Youth Spaces.
Community Development Worker Chris Stanland explained: "We were the only part of town that hadn't got this sort of equipment so we wanted to bring it to the West Marsh. It's free to use and we are open until 9pm most days so when the gates are open just come in.
"It's nice gentle equipment, it's not hardcore or excessive. We have football twice a week and it's proving popular with those children too, they came early just to go on the gym equipment. The equipment is for basically anybody, we picked the equipment for multi-use so we've had some school children as well as some of our over 50's club members on it today. It's a good thing to have for mental health as well as fitness."
Wellbeing Worker for North East Lincolnshire Council Dianne Yates was at the launch event and added: "This is great for me to promote to the families I work with, I am currently working at two of the schools in the area. We run a six week after school club called 'Let's Go Grimsby' which includes healthy eating, healthy lifestyle, healthy balance and cooking on a budget so this will add in to the exercise element and we can say to families that come to our club that there is something fun and free in the area that you can do as a family."
Colbie, 9 and Tibi, 10, from Littlecoates Primary Academy were at the opening day celebrations. Colbie said: "It's very fun and good for my fitness, I'll be letting all my friends at school know about it." Tibi added: "It's very fun and I enjoyed it, I am going to ask my mum if she can bring me here again."
The West Marsh Community Centre are launching some free courses taught by Franklin College next month. They have many activities throughout the week which can also be found on their Facebook Page and they are also looking for gardening volunteers to join the team.
